Which Bible Version Should I Choose?

May 2025

Engil offers three English translations, plus a Children’s Bible. Whether you want a literal, scholarly rendering, the familiar cadence of the King James, or a clear modern reading, here’s a guide to help you decide.

How to Choose

For Personal Devotion

Choose the version you already read and love — its familiar cadences feel especially powerful in your own voice. If you prefer modern language, the WEB is clear and accessible.

For a Gift

Consider what translation the recipient already reads. If you’re not sure, the WEB is an excellent default — clear, natural to listen to, and widely understood. If they grew up with the King James, choose that: the familiar wording is much of the gift.

For Children

The Children's Bible version uses simplified language appropriate for young listeners. It's especially meaningful when narrated in a parent's or grandparent's voice — perfect for bedtime listening.

For Study

The ASV prioritizes accuracy over readability. It's excellent for close study of the text, though it may sound less natural when read aloud.

A Note on Language

Engil currently narrates the Bible in English only — the three translations above, plus the Children’s Bible. Record your voice sample in English and your recordings will be read in your voice, in English.

We are often asked about other languages. They are not available today, and we would rather say so than take an order we cannot fill.

Can I Change Later?

Your voice profile is saved (if you create an account), so you can order additional translations anytime without re-recording. Many families start with a single book — like the Psalms or the Gospel of John — and add more over time.
